    We are looking for a passionate Chief Architect who can connect equally as well with business partners, external solution providers and the internal technical teams. This pivotal role will ensure that we have a solid view of the coming challenges and opportunities and a clear roadmap to ensure that our solutions stay ahead of our competition. In addition there is scope to look wider and identify potential new business opportunities for the group.

     

    The architecture team is small hence the successful candidate will have to be able to traverse the architecture space from Enterprise to Solution and have a sound knowledge of Infrastructure and Integration. They will also be responsible for defining and running architectural governance functions which do not bury the squads in documentation and bureaucracy.

     

    Communication is key to this role, as the Chief Architect will have to be able to understand requirements, communicate roadmaps and work with the delivery squads to ensure that solutions remain aligned to the agreed architectures as they evolve through our product based delivery model.

    Accountabilities

    How you will contribute:

     

    • Defining, maintaining and communicating Technology roadmaps
    • Ensuring sound governance processes are in place and being followed
    • Working with Technical Leads to define individual solution architectures
    • Liaising with the Technical Leads in each squad to ensure that solutions match architectures
    • Working with Development Managers and other senior technical resources to develop technical and architectural best practices and processes
    • Managing the other architects in the practice
    • Consolidate architecture and process patterns
    • Provide due diligence for technology and partner selection
    • Carry out technology spikes and deep dives for CTO and leadership team
    • Provide technology updates and on-going reports to CTO and leadership team
    • Look out down the line for disruptors and technology enablers in key areas such as social media, push notification, AI, cloud etc, to enhance product strategies
    • Ensuring that all solutions align to our security guidelines

    Experience, skills and professional attributes

    The ideal skills for the role are:

     

    • Understanding of all elements of an Architectural practice, with expertise in more than one
    • Being able to mentor, coach and manage more junior or specialised architectural resources
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Understanding agile from an architectural perspective
    • Strong understanding of modern architectural practices such as Functional Reactive Programming
    • Lead, with credibility, highly technical teams in challenging projects
    • Be able to establish excellent relationships with colleagues in editorial, marketing, operations, data as well as the rest of Economist Digital
    • Build and maintain relationships with vendors and peers in the market
    • Experience with the following technologies: Git, Node.js, GraphQL, Elasticsearch, Docker
    • Using AWS to architect solutions. Experience with SQS, SNS, Lambda, RDS, DynamoDB and CloudFront would all be advantageous
    • Understanding the benefits of collated telemetry and logging
    • An understanding of various Enterprise Integration Patterns with a focus on messaging
    • Working knowledge of a number of modern programming languages and paradigms
    • Demonstrate resilience and clarity when dealing with difficult and demanding situations

     

    In general an understanding that technology and innovation needs to address direct business needs while keeping in line with a long term strategy to ensure core stability and agility to address new opportunities.
