    At The Economist we are transforming our data operations to support the growing needs of a
    modern digital media business. As a result we have the opportunity for an experienced Data Architect to enhance our Data Platform capabilities. Reporting directly to the Head of Data Platform, you will be responsible for delivering a robust data architecture to support all our data activities, including business intelligence, insights, marketing activation and data science needs.

    This opportunity is suited to someone who has proven experience delivering data platform architectures, including “big data” systems for managing large datasets such as web analytics. You should understand the data challenges of a modern digital business and the changing landscape of data technology, and be able to see how one provides solutions to the other.

    Accountabilities

    How you will contribute:

    The Data Platforms team is responsible for all aspects of data technology delivery, including traditional warehouse operations, cloud-based big data activities, data ingestion, and integrations with 3rd-party systems, data processing (ETL) and management of data quality. As the architect of this team, you will be responsible for defining data models, sourcing data feeds and delivering data to service the publisher team's data needs and ensuring the proposed solutions and designs are aligned to business requirements and data strategy.

     

    • Provide thought leadership in identifying pragmatic and innovative solutions that are balanced against; project timeframes, available budgets, and future capability
    • Maintain and enhance the Enterprise Data Model to include new business concepts required to service data & insight needs of the business
    • Identify and analyse data sources and processing rules required to satisfy needs of the business
    • Manage relationship with suppliers of business data (internal as well external) to ensure business needs are fulfilled on time
    • Develop and maintain data and information artefacts - policies, standards and data models, data mapping rules between source systems and target data models
    • Communicate data architecture and mapping rules to development teams (onshore + offshore)
    • Establish data governance to improve and enforce data quality standards
    • Oversee development and testing of end to end data solutions, enforcing established data architecture and processing patterns
    • Conduct regular data clinics to walk through new as well as enhanced data solutions with the business stakeholders and end users
    • Provide regular progress updates on data initiatives to the Head of Data Platform

    Experience, skills and professional attributes

    The desirable skills for this role include:

    • A Bachelor of Science degree or higher within Computer Science, Mathematics or related discipline is ideal
    • Previous experience working within a similar role is preferable
    • Extensive experience working on SQL Server & AWS platforms
    • Performing conceptual, logical, and physical data modelling with established modelling tools such as Erwin Data modeller
    • Proven track record of of designing and implementing Big Data and Data Warehousing solutions
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including negotiating, good spoken and written English
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work with incomplete or imperfect data
    • Experience of working within publishing or media is ideal
    • Previous exposure to dashboard development using Qlik, Looker or other data visualisation tools is ideal
