    We are looking for a passionate Tech Lead who can refine and communicate business requirements, whilst empowering the engineers in our Content Platform cross-functional squad; working within an agile environment.


    Content Platform is the engine for all editorial output of The Economist and sister publications across all digital outputs including text, images, audio and video. It is a cloud-native platform based on a cutting edge reactive architecture which embraces serverless technology written mainly in Golang and JavaScript. It's designed to be robust enough to stay responsive and resilient under extreme volatile load.



    How you will contribute:


    • Being accountable alongside the business for the delivery and enhancement of the content platform product whilst mentoring and leading the other members of the squad
    • Leading on architecture decisions and designing the workflow for the squad
    • Working with the squad to create, maintain and iterate strategies and standards
    • Creating roadmaps for the squad that can be followed by squad members and the business alike
    • Communicating the the work the squad is doing and occasionally picking up tasks as an engineer within the squad
    • Ensuring a security consciousness is upheld by the squad
    • Be heavily involved in the planning process for sprint based work to ensure estimates are reasonable and the tasks can be understood by everyone
    • Identifying risks in the product team and putting in place strategies to mitigate them, i.e knowledge silos, technology changes, succession planning

    Experience, skills and professional attributes

    The ideal skills for the role are:


    • Understanding of an agile product lifecycle in software engineering (flow, feedback and continuous learning)
    • Being able to mentor, coach and manage other engineers in the squad
    • Be able to establish a clear relationship between product, consumer and business stakeholders
    • Experience with the following technologies: Git, Golang, Node.js, GraphQL, Elasticsearch, Redis, Docker, Nginx, Varnish
    • Using AWS to architect solutions. Experience with SQS, SNS, Lambda, RDS, DynamoDB and CloudFront would all be advantageous
    • Understanding the benefits of collated telemetry and logging
    • Be able to articulate different types and levels of testing, and where they are most appropriately used
    • An understanding of various Enterprise Integration Patterns with a focus on messaging would be extremely useful to the role
