The Communications department is part of the Circulation unit which is responsible for managing and growing The Economist’s global subscriber base. As part of the broader Marketing team, the Communications team aims to raise top of the funnel awareness for The Economist brand and content. In addition, the Communications team proactively builds and shapes the public profile of the Circulation unit’s business leaders among relevant communities. The team is active in a variety of channels including but not limited to digital and broadcast media relations, public relations, trade and editorial award entries and speaking engagements for The Economist’s  journalists and business leaders.


Currently, we are seeking a Communications Associate to join our world class Communications team. The Communications Associate will report to the Director, Communications and work closely with the global Communications team to help grow awareness for The Economist brand, content and business activities. 


The successful candidate will possess a unique mix of analytical, writing and people skills and gain first-hand knowledge and experience working as an in-house PR professional for a highly-regarded, global brand in a fast-paced, exciting news environment.


In this role you would be expected to:



  • Provide support for the global Communications team including department infrastructure and administration i.e. collateral management (updated bios and photos, document development and management, press room maintenance); budget administration (with the Global VP Communications); premia supply; press mailings; event coordination
  • Draft weekly internal activity report
  • Track and maintain departmentment metrics; generate reports as needed
  • Work with the Director to share materials with the global agencies and the Communications team with sensitivities to deadlines and news cycles
  • Draft background materials, bios, fact sheets and other press materials as needed
  • Maintain and manage department activity tracking systems to ensure consistent usage and data input across the global team. Work with the VP to develop reports as needed
  • Work with the Director to implement awards strategy including drafting entries, tracking entries and wins across key regions, tracking and reporting budget
  • Develop and maintain systems to coordinate and track speaking opportunities and engagements for the Circulation team and the editorial team (as directed)
  • Develop and maintain lists for key content verticals
  • Management and tracking of comp list, digital subscriptions and mailings
  • Assistance with event management as and when needed

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:  


  • A strong attention to detail and be proactive, reliable, responsible and accurate
  • Familiarity with media monitoring and database services such as Meltwater and Cision
  • Have a strong interest in media relations and an understanding of news creation process and news cycles
  • Must be a confident communicator and presenter with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must possess excellent organizational and planning skills with the ability to work within tight deadlines
  • Possess the ability to keep information confidential
  • A self starter with a positive and professional demeanor
  • Experience working at a PR agency or in-house in a related PR role
  • An interest in politics, business and current affairs is a plus
  • Familiarity with the G-suite of tools
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting
