The Economist Events—the award-winning events and conferences division of The Economist Group —seeks a Head of programmes and content, Asia-Pacific, to develop our exciting events portfolio. This role has overall responsibility for the format and content of events across the Asia-Pacific. Drawing on the editorial resources of The Economist, we look to provide world-class speaker lists, audience-led events and outcome-driven programmes. This role is responsible for delivering on that promise.
Constantly seeking new ways of informing and entertaining, and working closely with editorial, commercial and marketing teams, the ideal candidate will have leadership experience, vision, editorial skills, and strong project management discipline. The role is key to the development of our events both as stand-alone occasions and as part of integrated programmes alongside Thought Leadership, advertising, and other promotional activities. We are ambitious for our events business and seek someone to deliver on our vision.


In this role you will be expected to:

  • Be responsible for developing, and overseeing the development of, event programmes which are engaging, thoughtful, insightful and true to The Economist brand
  • Lead a team of programme editors, executives and assistants (some of whom will also have direct reports) to deliver a diverse portfolio of event programmes
  • Develop excellent relationships with influential stakeholders within industry, government, academia and civic society, leading editorial meetings and advisory boards to enable the effective research and delivery of event programmes and content
  • Manage freelance programme editors on individual projects
  • Work with the global head of programmes to ensure all programmes are delivered to high quality standards and agreed milestones
  • Act as “executive sponsor” of one event
  • Work with editorial to ensure that programme themes and topics are researched and developed to meet the high-quality standards of The Economist Conduct market research and due diligence to be aware of competition or timing issues that may affect the event’s success
  • Work with the team to develop ideas in response to RFPs for custom events that align with client goals and satisfy editorial guidelines
  • Represent The Economist Events editorial arm in sales/pitch meetings to clients
  • Secure and manage the support and participation of editorial staff within the Group
  • Manage the programme team to identify and secure high-calibre speakers within required time-frames and deadlines
  • Undertake copywriting in a range of formats – event programmes, summary papers, blogs, articles
  • Work with the marketing team to define target audiences and create communications materials that will drive registrations
  • Lead the programme team in working with the sponsorship team to identify sponsors, assisting with sales meetings and pitches as required
  • Implement digital formats (webinars, live streaming, video) to support our events
  • Research and present ideas for new events and formats
  • Brief speakers prior to events, holding phone calls and meetings as appropriate
  • Work with the team to deliver events on the day


Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in this role you must have :

  • Solid experience of delivering a portfolio of high-quality events
  • Fluency in English (another language would be an advantage)
  • Experience of managing staff
  • Experience demonstrating editorial/content skills in a range of formats
  • Solid understanding and experience of the working environment in Asia or parts thereof
