The Economist Events—the award-winning events and conferences division of The Economist Group—seeks a Senior Programme Editor to develop our exciting events portfolio across. With overall responsibility for the format and content of a series of events, and drawing on the editorial resources of The Economist, we look to provide world-class speaker lists an audience-led events; this role is responsible for delivering on that promise.

Constantly seeking new ways of informing and entertaining, working with sponsors and editorial and marketing, the role suits someone with leadership experience, vision, editorial skills, and strong project management discipline. The role is key to the development of our events both as stand-alone occasions and as part of integrated programmes alongside Thought Leadership, Advertising, and other promotional activities. We are ambitious for our events business and seek someone to deliver on our vision.

 

This is a one-year contract position.

Accountabilities

In this role you will be expected to:

 

  • Develop excellent relationships with influential stakeholders within industry, policy, NGOs, academia and civic society, leading editorial meetings and advisory boards to enable the effective research and delivery of event programmes and content
  • Manage a small team of programme executives and assistants to deliver a diverse portfolio of event programmes
  • Manage freelance programme editors on individual projects
  • Work with the global and regional heads of programmes to ensure all programmes are delivered to high quality standards and agreed milestones
  • Work with editorial to ensure that programme themes and topics are researched and developed to meet the high-quality standards of The Economist brand. Conduct market research and due diligence to be aware of competition or timing issues that may affect the event’s success
  • Secure and manage the support and participation of editorial staff within the Group
  • Identify and secure high-calibre speakers within required time-frames and deadlines
  • Copywriting in a range of formats – event programmes, summary papers, blogs, articles
  • Work with the Marketing team to define target audiences and create communications materials that will drive registrations
  • Work with the Sponsorship team to identify sponsors, assisting with sales meetings and pitches as required
  • Implement digital formats (webinars, live streaming, video) to support our events
  • Research and present ideas for new events and formats
  • Briefing speakers prior to events, holding phone calls and meetings as appropriate
  • Deliver events on the day, working with programme assistants

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in this role you must have:

  • Solid experience of managing and delivering a portfolio of events
  • Strong primary and secondary research skills which translate into ability to deliver compelling event programmes
  • Fluency in English (another language would be an advantage)
  • Experience producing events internationally
  • Experience of managing staff
  • Experience demonstrating editorial/content skills in a range of formats: interviews, chairing events
