As the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) helps leaders prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. The business has a large subscription client base, receiving economic, political and industry analysis through our websites, as well as a consulting business in which we are sometimes required to deliver bespoke content in digital formats (websites, and apps) to clients. At EIU Digital, the technology function in the business, we have three kinds of work, namely strategic projects, changes requests and bug fixes, and operational activities – which deliver products to our subscribers, our online store users and our clients of custom content.


Strategic projects can be 3 – 9 months long, with interim releases and distinct testing phases; smaller changes and bug fixes are bundled into weekly or bi-weekly releases, with testing fitted in. These projects cover the front-end web or other delivery, as well as our backend supporting systems.


Currently we are seeking a Microsoft Application Developer to maintain and update EIU’s Content Management & Workflow applications.


This role will be part of our rapidly growing Gurgaon team, which is connected to a wider Global presence across London and New York. Some flexibility in terms of working across UK and US hours as well as travelling to our offices in London and New York may be required.



In the role you would be expected to:

  • Develop application features in MS Office (Excel, Word, Access) and MS SQL Server
  • Help replace legacy business systems with applications built in the ASP.NET web development framework.
  • Work in an Agile Scrum process where team communication and flexibility are highly valued
  • Work directly with business users to develop application updates and fixes
  • Lead and mentor junior developers on projects
  • Attend weekly staff and 1-1 meetings as well as daily project scrum meetings
  • Review and estimate business requirements and user stories
  • Break down user stories into development tasks 
  • Participate in design sessions and create technical design documents
  • Evaluate application architecture and plan technical requirements for improvements and upgrades
  • Develop EIU-specific Content Managements and Workflow extensions in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Access) using VBA, C# and Excel formulae
  • Develop database features in MS Access and MS SQL Server (data modeling, T-SQL, and SSIS) for managing business data and reporting
  • Develop test harnesses and unit tests to validate developed features
  • Communicate with users to resolve testing defects

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Solid experience of developing custom desktop applications using VBA and/or C#
  • Proven ability to deliver bespoke solutions to a high quality and to time using appropriate technologies to add commercial value
  • The ability to work with and manage large datasets
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (particularly advanced use of Excel, Word and Access)
  • Ability to extract data from disparate data sources
  • Experience in database (SQL + Access) architecture and development
  • Experience leading and junior team members
