As the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) helps leaders prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. The business has a large subscription client base, receiving economic, political and industry analysis through our websites, as well as a consulting business in which we are sometimes required to deliver bespoke content in digital formats (websites, apps etc) to clients. At EIU Digital, the technology function in the business, we have three kinds of work, namely strategic projects, changes requests and bug fixes, and operational activities – which deliver products to our subscribers, our online store users and our clients of custom content.


Strategic projects can be 3 – 9 months long, with interim releases and distinct testing phases; smaller changes and bug fixes are bundled into weekly or bi-weekly releases, with testing fitted in. These projects cover the front-end web or other delivery, as well as our backend supporting systems.


We are now seeking a project manager and scrum master, reporting to our Programme Director in the Digital team. The successful candidate sits on our product team and will also be a part of our rapidly growing Gurgaon team, which is connected to a wider Global presence across London and New York.  Some flexibility in terms of working across UK and US hours as well as travelling to our offices in London and New York may be required.



In the role you would be expected to: 

  • Be the single point of contact for the product team to deliver solutions aligned with business strategy and goals, working across all teams within the organisation, Editorial, Product Development, Marketing, Sales, Finance and Digital
  • Participate in and provide input to programme development, project scoping and prioritisation, and high-level planning
  • Schedule development and tracking, scope management, budget tracking, risk identification and management, reporting project status and KPIs up and across the organisation
  • Constantly look for opportunities to improve interaction with the business, with a strong focus on understanding and achieving strategic needs of the organisation
  • Foresee and remove blockers to progress, negotiating with stakeholders, refocusing senior leadership, addressing procurement issues
  • Engage and build trust with people involved in the product management and projects, communicating a clear sense of direction and purpose for self and team
  • Be a scrum master for the product delivery team
  • Lead collaborative and planning processes, prioritise work against capacity and capability of the team, facilitate sprint planning, backlog grooming and sprint review and retrospective meetings as well as daily stand-ups
  • Define, track and report on product and project KPIs pertaining to your area of responsibility
  • Ensure individual is execution and delivery focused, driven to meet commitments to delivery dates, quality and scope
  • Participate actively in the project management and agile delivery communities, share and apply skills and knowledge, participate actively in the Project Management / Scrum Master / Delivery Manager practice looking for continuous improvement in our processes and tools
  • Perform light business analysis activities when needed
  • Recommend process improvements for Project Management and Scrum Master practice
  • Develop and manage the program for a product stream, liaising closely with the Product Owner
  • Participate in forward planning – prioritising, scheduling and resourcing
  • Maintain and share an up to date awareness of industry trends, new technology and exploring those that would benefit our business
  • Recommend tools, processes and solutions

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Bachelors in Information or Computer Science or a related field
  • 5+ years’ experience managing projects and leading a global Agile team
  • Project Management and/or Scrum Master certification
  • Excellent spoken and written English skills
  • Strong documentation skills to create requirement documentation and functional specifications, epics and user stories, process and data flow diagrams
  • Strong data analysis skills
  • Experience working on projects delivering web sites: Front-end, SEO, Accessibility / WCAG 2.0
  • Experience working on a content delivery site, delivering content products (as well as Marketing content), with a CMS, e.g. Episerver
