As the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) helps leaders prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. The EIU is the global standard in providing quality, actionable intelligence to the public and private sector, assessing issues that impact the marketplace for over two hundred countries. The business has a large subscription client base, receiving economic, political and industry analysis through our websites, as well as a consulting business in which we are sometimes required to deliver bespoke content in digital formats (websites, apps etc) to clients. At EIU Digital, the technology function in the business, we have three kinds of work, namely strategic projects, changes requests and bug fixes, and operational activities – which deliver products to our subscribers, our online store users and our clients of custom content.


Strategic projects can be 3 – 9 months long, with interim releases and distinct testing phases; smaller changes and bug fixes are bundled into weekly or bi-weekly releases, with testing fitted in. These projects cover the front-end web or other delivery, as well as our backend supporting systems.


We are seeking a Development and Operations (DevOps) Manager who will lead a team of 2-5 application developers for our Content Management, Workflow and website systems in MS Office (Excel, Word, Access) and ASP.NET. This is a hands-on position where the DevOps Manager will be involved in requirements analysis, functional and technical design discussions, testing, scoping, and working with business and development teams. The DevOps manager will be the main contact and bridge between the development team and other parts of the business.


This role will be part of our rapidly growing Gurgaon team, which is connected to a wider Global presence across London and New York. Some flexibility in terms of working across UK and US hours as well as travelling to our offices in London and New York may be required.



In the role you would be expected to:

Provide leadership

  • Work effectively with internal and external clients at all levels within the organisation up to senior management level
  • Build relationships across our business and technology teams that will ensure high-quality communications and trust
  • Communicate priorities and set project delivery expectations with stakeholders and senior management
  • Report on team and project status using excellent written and spoken communications


Manage team

  • Manage and assign application developers’ tasks and priorities. Be highly organised and ensure high team productivity.
  • Mentor team members to improve skills that increase team effectiveness (e.g. technical, communication, planning)


Lead project delivery

  • Manage projects and operations development in an Agile Scrum process. Have the ability to fulfill or support the Scrum Master and Product Owner roles
  • Work directly with business users and clients to understand and resolve problems
  • Manage developers and code development to deliver to milestones
  • Provide accurate estimates for project planning

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Bachelors in Computer Science or other technical degree 
  • 3-5 yrs experience in applications development (MS Office, Excel, Word Access) and website development (ASP.NET, MVC, and SQL)
  • 1-2 yrs experience in a technical lead or architect role
  • 3-5 yrs experience in team management and scheduling
  • Experience with Agile Scrum development
