The Economist is seeking someone with strong numerical and critical reasoning skills to join our Data Team as a Data Analyst. Our Data Team is a central source of data skills and technology working across all parts of the business. As part of this team you will be studying the behaviour of our customers, understanding how our website and mobile products are being used and helping to set the roadmap for future product development.

 

In this role you will take responsibility for data from one of The Economist’s main products. You will work with product managers, developers, business stakeholders and editors to make sure they receive relevant data and insights. You will make sure we’re measuring the right things and have a clear view of what’s really happening. Your work and the opportunities you identify will help the team decide how our products should develop.

 

Prior experience of SQL databases or data analysis in a commercial setting would be advantageous but are not required for this position, and applications from those looking for their first role in this field are welcome. We are primarily seeking a self-motivated individual, with an aptitude for reasoning about numerical data and strong communication skills.

Accountabilities

In this role you would be expected to:

 

  • Analyse data from our products to explore customer usage patterns and behaviour
  • Visualise and present the insights you uncover
  • Identify opportunities to improve our products and serve our customers better
  • Work in Excel and SQL to analyse our large datasets

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Excellent numerical skills
  • The ability to examine data critically to extract meaningful insights
  • The ability to use tools such as Excel to manipulate data
  • Either prior experience or ability and willingness to learn SQL
  • An interest in human behaviour and digital publishing
  • The ability to communicate findings clearly to non-technical colleagues
