The Economist Intelligence Unit is a leading provider of country, industry and management analysis. As the research arm of The Economist Group, we deliver information that helps organisations to stay on top of market opportunities and risks around the world.


We are looking for a candidate that has 1-3 years of experience in secondary research and management of large datasets, preferably also familiar with city level metrics and data. This role will help deliver two of the Economist Intelligence Unit's highest-profile city products, requiring the ability to manage data collected across over 1,000 cities and thousands of data points. You must possess excellent research and data management skills, along with a detailed knowledge of economic data sources. You must be skilled in delivering projects to deadlines and prioritising time and resources accordingly. A thorough understanding of country macroeconomic trends and international business will also be crucial.


You will work within a wider team helping to maintain our economic data and models, contribute to the development of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s data products, specifically related to city level data, and help expand these products by undertaking unsupervised research and data management.


In the role you would be expected to:

  • Help manage large datasets and databases to protect and enhance the quality of the city-level socioeconomic data for all our existing city-based products.
  • Provide support to our city-based Cost of Living service and the biannual survey process. 
  • Provide support to our Market Explorer product and build relationships with data providers including national statistical offices, city authorities and other regional or global associations to ensure the on-going provision of data.
  • Engage in project research, data collection, analysis and preparation of presentations.
  • Develop quality assurance through regular error checks on the data and make sure data meet evolving international standards of comparability or set definitions of concepts and metrics as appropriate, where international standards are not available.
  • Deliver projects to deadlines by prioritising time and resources accordingly.
  • Collaborate with several teams in multiple locations.

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Relevant degree in Economics, Business, International Relations or Urban Affairs
  • 1-3 years of professional experience in data management and research and analysis of economic data
  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (particularly advanced use of Excel)
  • Experience developing research methodologies and handling (maintaining & analyzing) large data sets
  • 1-3 years’ experience in secondary research and an ability to extract data from disparate data sources
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct data cleaning and economic research
  • Experience in the use of statistical packages
  • Track record of delivering projects to deadlines and prioritising time and resources accordingly
  • Ability working across several research teams, often remotely
  • Ability to work effectively in teams to meet project objectives, sometimes working with a combination of internal staff and external contributors
  • Strong demonstrated quantitative, analytical and conceptual thinking capability, with superb attention to detail
  • Excellent English
  • Knowledge of economic data sources
  • Good understanding of macroeconomic, demographic, and econometric concepts
  • Experience in econometric modelling (desirable)
  • Experience with VBA coding (desirable)
