The Economist is seeking to fill the position of Business Development Director, Luxury sector in its London Office.




The Business Development Director will be expected to research, scope and define, then go on to develop and implement strategies to build global revenues from luxury sector clients across advertising, circulation new product in digital (web, app, social/third party platform), video, podcast, print and events.


The Business Development Director will drive innovation in order to deliver market leading thought-provoking and engaging campaigns and activations for luxury clients, and to drive subscriber engagement and retention.


The successful applicant will collaborate with teams to measure, test and iterate existing and new initiatives. They will also establish and nurture strong relationships between internal teams in product, editorial, sales, marketing/events and technology across The Economist’s titles.

Experience, skills and professional attributes



To succeed in this role you must have:

  • An MBA or Master’s degree equivalent
  • State-of-the-art understanding of revenue generation, content distribution and audience engagement across digital channels on web, app and social/third party platforms;
  • Experience owning a P&L in an editorial business with a demonstrable track record conceiving, leading and delivering strategic initiatives while managing costs to improve profit margins;
  • A data-driven approach to defining commercial strategy and making decisions, ideally with experience at a top tier management consultancy or equivalent;
  • Experience leading and motivating cross-disciplinary teams across multiple geographies and driving collaboration between editorial, sales/marketing and technology/product;
  • Strong communication skills, including experience presenting and communicating to board level individuals, and a knack for effectively influencing and managing multiple stakeholders at all levels of media organisations;
  • Quantitative expertise, great command of digital and social analytical and reporting tools;
  • Strong project management skills and ability to juggle multiple priorities at once; and
  • Significant experience living and working in the UK, US and other international markets
