The Economist’s Digital Solutions team is a passionate group of digital professionals who look after a number of digital products and services, both facing our readers and The Economist's businesses. The team consists of a range of skills, from product managers to data scientists, working in cross functional teams, on mobile products and business intelligence alike. Fostering strong agile engineering practices and making data-driven decisions the team plays a pivotal role in making our business partners deliver growth.

 

We are a multi-disciplinary team working in a fast-paced and collaborative environment, who value honest opinion and open debate. We’re responsible for designing, building, testing and releasing one of our flagship products, our website. We’re in the business of building modern, state-of-the-art web products, and delivering a first-rate user experience is essential.

 

We build our software incrementally, iteratively, and continuously, so you’ll be able to see new work go live to over 11 million visitors around the globe every month. Our flavour of agile has been heavily influenced by XP and Kanban, and if something isn’t working, we change it.

Accountabilities

In this role you will be expected to:

  • Work alongside, support, and motivate delivery teams, and manage stakeholder expectations
  • Use visual means to foster clear communication between delivery teams and various stakeholder groups
  • Co-ordinate the delivery of enterprise-class web applications
  • Champion agile and lean best practices, and help foster a culture of continuous improvement
  • Manage delivery scope and risks throughout the project lifecycle
  • Create and maintain lightweight project plans, incorporating budgeting and forecasting
  • Scrum Master, coach and team agile evangelist

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in this role you must demonstrate:       

  • That you have managed software development projects, and are familiar with agile and lean methodologies. You are a strong communicator with the ability to proactively manage stakeholders by partnering on decisions
  • Experience conducting the Scrum Master role for a software development team that was diligently applying Scrum principles, practices, and theory
  • Experience of coaching teams, in a collaborative environment with a flat structure to deliver projects successfully
  • That you can act as a servant leader exhibiting characteristics like listening, empathy, and persuasion in order to enable colleagues to perform their roles effectively
  • The ability to successfully work in a team environment by offering personal counsel, and nurturing positive relationships within the team
  • Proven examples of using initiative and creativity to achieve project milestones
  • Experience of being able to challenge and influence decisions
  • The ability to determine and report on key project metrics to stakeholders with the ability to adapt project plans based on project reality
  • That you are pragmatic and flexible, with a willingness to take on different roles and responsibilities in order to help successfully deliver a project
  • That you are highly organised and detail orientated
  • Experience of delivering complex projects
  • Experience working with offshore teams
  • A deep understanding of the product development cycle from project discovery to final delivery
  • Applicable knowledge of the technologies used by the team
