As the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) helps leaders prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. The EIU is the global standard in providing quality, actionable intelligence to the public and private sector, assessing issues that impact the marketplace for over two hundred countries.


We are recruiting a deputy industry editor to fact-check and edit reports on industry sectors. The work will include researching the sectors to ensure our coverage is accurate, as well as checking data and forecasts.


The ideal candidate will undertake other duties related to The Economist Intelligence Unit’s industry services as they arise. These will include liaising with internal staff and external contributors on the flow of reports throughout the year. He/she will also be responsible for dealing with client queries, responding directly or forwarding to relevant parties.


In the role you would be expected to:


Ensure quality of all Industry Reports

  • Edit EIU industry reports on up to six industries—automotive, consumer goods, energy, financial services, healthcare and telecoms—across 60-70 countries per industry to ascertain that they meet the highest expectations of reliability, timeliness, range of coverage and astuteness.


  • Check facts, ensure consistency with accompanying data, and monitor analysis for consistency with market trends, the EIU view and with Economist brand values.


  • Edit reports to ensure that they read clearly and coherently.


  • Give feedback to analysts and industry chiefs.


Monitor industry data

  • Review the excel workbooks accompanying each industry report, in order to ensure that data is reliable and that forecasts are consistent with the analysis in the reports.

  • Liaise with industry data team, editors and industry chiefs to correct problems and to flag up persistent issues.

  • Collaborate to reach resolution.

Ensure smooth running of Industry Report process

  • Keep to our fixed schedules for industry reports, liaising with analysts, sub-editors and production teams to ensure that deadlines are met and that publication proceeds smoothly.

  • Collaborate with industry chiefs as necessary to resolve persistent problems with scheduling or freelancer processes.

Respond to queries on industry reports

  • When contacted, work with editors, industry data team and industry chiefs to resolve client queries on industry reports.

  • Monitor for persistent queries and use these to improve future quality.

Implement future improvements to industry reports

  • Work with industry chiefs to implement changes to templates, data tables, and analysis.

  • Ensure that changes are communicated to analysts, and that future reports conform to the new standards.

Help with training on industry reports

  • Work with industry chiefs to train analysts and editors in report processes.

  • Highlight common mistakes and issues.

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Degree or higher, preferably in business, economics, English or journalism.
  • A minimum of one year's experience in editing or journalism, preferably business-related.
  • Familiarity with business concepts in one or more industry sectors.
  • Strong numeracy skills and a basic understanding of economics.
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent English, particularly written English.
