The Economist Group is the leading source of analysis on international business and world affairs. We deliver our information through a range of formats, from newspapers and magazines to conferences and electronic services. What ties us together is the objectivity of our opinion, the originality of our insight, and our advocacy of economic and political freedom around the world.

Our Global Technology team provides services to The Economist Group businesses and is responsible for IT operations, infrastructure, systems and support.

We are currently looking for an experienced publishing systems manager to join us. This is a key role within the technology team, but also a critical bridge between the Editorial, Graphics, Production and Systems teams. The Digital Publishing Manager is responsible for people, processes and systems that are vital to the creation of our content and, by extension, the production of some of our most important products: The Economist, 1843, The World In, Which MBA, Economist.com and our digital editions. As a member of our Global Technology management team, this role will help lead our digital transformation as we adopt a more rigorous service management framework and an agile methodology. The Digital Publishing Manager will also drive our change from a print publishing system to a modern content authoring platform.

The role requires a degree of flexibility and collaborative working within Global Technology and across the business. • Propose changes that exploit technology advances in order to increase productivity, increase revenue, reduce cost or reduce risk
  • Manage and develop the Publishing Systems team
    • Lead and motivate a team of four to deliver high quality support and systems management; promote a customer-focused attitude within the technology team
    • Develop the skills and capabilities of team members through coaching, training and knowledge sharing
    • Build relationships across our technology and editorial teams to create opportunities to deliver value to customers, both internal and external
  • Ensure high standards of system performance, availability, security and support
    • Establish and maintain service levels of technology solutions in partnership with IT colleagues and external companies; all production systems are to be proactively monitored, reported on, and supported to the agreed service requirements, which can be up to 24 x 7
    • Adhere to all agreed standards for regulatory compliance, security and configuration
    • Ensure the effective and timely resolution of all incidents and problems across the infrastructure and applications in the assigned portfolio
    • Ensure that business continuity and disaster recovery plans are documented and tested regularly
    • Manage communications related to incidents and problems to ensure that service stakeholders are kept informed and are updated on progress through to resolution
    • Assess the risks to all services in the portfolio and inform the relevant stakeholders
  • Propose and manage an annual budget
    • Plan activities and initiatives for subsequent financial years and outline the P&L and capital costs to implement those plans
    • Operate within the agreed budget and report on monthly expenditures
    • Manage vendor relationships to obtain effective services at competitive costs
  • Implement and monitor a set of agreed service management processes
    • Foster a culture of continuous improvement; propose changes to practices and processes that drive the team to deliver services more efficiently
    • Adopt an iterative and agile development methodology to introduce changes more safely and effectively
