We need a research analyst/data analyst to work within an internationally-focused and diverse team helping to support our macroeconomic data and models, and to deliver bespoke research projects with a strong quantitative element.


In the role you would be expected to:

  • Perform essential maintenance and checking of Country Analysis’s economic data and forecasts
  • Contribute to the production and development of the Economics Unit's data products

Macroeconomic data integrity

  • Take responsibility for all data checking performed as part of the publication schedule.  Use the error check to detect problems with the country workbooks, and then liaise with the Editor to resolve them and ensure the final published data is correct.
  • Manage the Economics Support inbox, replying to queries directly related to the data from both internal and external clients.  Through this process, work to resolve data issues that arise outside of the publication schedule.
  • Monitor changes in external data sources and work closely with the regional teams to enhance the quality of EIU data.

Technical development

  • Assist in enhancing the structure of the country forecasting models used by Country Analysis regional teams, ensuring the accuracy, reliability and consistency of their economic forecasts.
  • Work with the technical team as needed on development work based in Excel. 

Custom research project support

  • Support quantitative research projects with the Custom and Economic Research (CER) and Industry and Management Research (IMR) teams, in particular on data-gathering, data analysis and econometric modeling tasks, working under the supervision of an Economist within the Economics Unit.

Experience, skills and professional attributes:

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Experience: 0-2 years
  • Education: Graduate/Post-Graduate in Economics/Business Economics or Business Management 
  • A strong understanding of macroeconomic, demographic and international trade concepts and knowledge of key data series
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • A strong interest in international economics with knowledge of econometric modelling and forecasting

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • Understanding of basic economics concepts and the key indicators
  • Advanced Excel skills – experience with formula auditing, manipulating and cleaning large data sets in excel, knowledge of advanced functions like VLookup/HLookup, Match, Offset, Index, Indirect, Nested If-Then-Else and similar
  • Proficiency in Visual Basic (desirable)
  • A strong understanding of Econometrics (desirable)
