The Economist is a leading source of analysis on international business and world affairs, published weekly in print and tablet editions, and daily through our Espresso app and Economist.com. We deliver our information through a range of formats, from newspapers and magazines to conferences, films and digital editions. What ties us together is the objectivity of our opinion, the originality of our insight and our advocacy of economic and political freedom around the world.

The Economist is seeking an experienced analyst to turn customer behaviour into actionable insights. At The Economist we want to deliver the best possible experience for our current and future customers. We also believe that using our digital, transactional, customer and other data sources effectively is key to this goal. As a result we are seeking someone with experience delivering analysis that can help our Marketing, Product and Editorial teams make more informed decisions.

We are looking for someone who can understand The Economist, build relationships with business stakeholders, understand their data needs and communicate complex data to a non-technical audience. The person should also have the technical skills to work hands-on with data, and the critical thinking ability necessary to create meaningful insights. The person should also be able to direct and mentor junior team members in the course of delivering larger pieces of work.

In return we will offer you a visible leadership role in the usage of data at The Economist. You will own projects end-to-end, presenting your work at all levels and having a genuine impact on the direction of the business. Reporting directly to the Head of Insight and Data Science you will have a voice in the overall data strategy of The Economist.

You will also be part of our newly created central Insight and Data Science team, which has a remit to advance a culture of data-driven decision making throughout the organisation. This team combines BI developers, insight analysts and data scientists, creating many opportunities for sharing ideas and developing new technical skills. And although the initial focus of this role will be digital behaviour, there will also be opportunities to work with varied data sources and in many areas of the business.

Accountabilities

In this role you would be expected to:

  • Build strong relationships throughout the business, understanding how teams operate
  • Identify opportunities for data to deliver value and inform decision-making
  • Produce high-quality insight and visualisation of our data
  • Work in SQL to analyse data directly
  • Mentor and support junior analysts
  • Communicate data clearly throughout the business

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • Prior experience as an analyst in a commercial organisation
  • Ability to examine data critically to extract meaningful insights
  • Ability to communicate findings clearly to non-technical colleagues
  • Experience using SQL to analyse data
  • The following would be advantageous but are not essential:
    • Experience working in a subscription-based business
    • Experience analysing TB-scale datasets in cloud-based environments (e.g. Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery)

To succeed in the role you must demonstrate:

  • A meticulous approach to all work, completed to high level of quality
  • The ability to work under time pressure while providing high quality output
  • The ability to work on your own with conviction to prioritize workload
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • The ability to mentor junior team members
  • The ability to remain calm when dealing with high-pressure situations and/or stakeholders
  • Team work
  • A professional, polite and positive demeanour
