The EIU is the global gold standard in providing quality, actionable intelligence to the public and private sector, assessing issues that impact the marketplace for over two hundred countries.

 

Currently, the EIU Digital Solutions is looking for a Microsoft system administrator to support EIU.com servers and applications including having primary responsibility for server infrastructure and performance, coordinating closely with EIU.com’s managed hosting provider – Centurylink.  The successful candidate will join a 3-4 person technology team in the EIU Gurgaon office, coordinating daily with New York and London teams.

 

 

Accountabilities

In this role you would be expected to:

 

Support and monitoring

  • Ensure server and website performance is as expected and report on SLA performance for multiple metrics (website response time, uptime, etc)
  • Understand system trends and provide underlying root cause analysis (CPU, disk, memory, network)
  • Monitor log files, backup and other key server indicators
  • Deploy monitoring thresholds at appropriate levels to ensure action can be taken in a timely fashion. Thresholds will provide alerts on informational, warning and error levels allowing problems to be resolved before they impact performance or availability. Alerting is performed in real time.
  • Conduct performance and tuning recommendations and implementation

Patching and updates

  • Liaise with Centurylink to ensure software patching is performed in a correct and timely fashion while minimizing downtime and business impact

Backup and recovery management

  • Design and implementation of a disaster recovery plan in line with business requirements
  • Configure and management of disaster recovery environments
  • Plan and support disaster recovery testing
  • Monitor disaster recovery synchronization status and remediation should the standby servers fall out of sync with production servers
  • Review and maintain backup and restore policies

Security

  • Regularly review and test firewall and load-balancer policies
  • Support annual security audits
  • Administer access rights to servers
  • Configure intrusion detection and prevention measures. Respond to attacks

Documentation and procedures

  • Create and maintain diagrams of infrastructure and servers
  • Maintain procedure manuals for standard activities
  • Maintain DR plans and procedures for fail-over and return

Administrative and progressive activities

  • Attend EIU weekly staff meetings
  • Attend manager weekly 1-1 meetings
  • Attend Centurylink weekly service management call
  • Attend Centurylink monthly service review meetings

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in this role you must have:

  • University Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience
  • Significant experience in a System Administration role managing production web application servers
  • Experience supporting and communicating with remote teams in different time zones
  • Proven ability to work independently with remote management

Key Skills - System Administration:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • ASP.NET applications on IIS 7.5
  • COM+ and MTS
  • TCP/IP networking fundamentals
  • Firewall and load-balancer fundamentals

Key Skills - Additional experience a plus:

  • C# and ASP.NET development
