As the research and analysis division of the Economist Group, The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) helps leaders prepare for opportunity, empowering them to act with confidence when making strategic decisions. The EIU is the global standard in providing quality, actionable intelligence to the public and private sector, assessing issues that impact the marketplace for over two hundred countries. The business has a large subscription client base, receiving economic, political and industry analysis through our websites, as well as a consulting business in which we are sometimes required to deliver bespoke content in digital formats (websites, apps etc) to clients.

 

Currently, we are seeking a Head of Technology to join the EIU reporting to our Managing Director. The successful candidate for this newly created global role will be based in London and will be responsible for leading and guiding our global technology efforts and infrastructure in support of our client deliverables. We are seeking a technology leader capable of developing and executing the technology vision as well as innovating and delivering new technology solutions that leverage the products and services of the organization. 

 

Accountabilities

In the role you would be expected to:

  • Assess the capabilities of the EIU digital team and drive whatever changes are necessary to enhance the departments effectiveness
  • Build linkages with the Economist newspaper's digital team to ensure enterprise wide synergies
  • Work with the wider EIU management team to recommend a development path for our digital services, based on feedback from our user base

  • Work closely with broader executive decision makers to ensure that we effectively leverage and utilise the right technology in order to deliver that development path in a timely and cost effective manner
  • Balance strategic thinking with operational execution; you will be required to plan, manage and implement significant change within the EIU Digital team, while also being able to provide ongoing strategic advice to the Managing Director of the business
  • Use a deep knowledge of technology to recommend and implement digital solutions which can be delivered in timely manner and within budget. The ability to think creatively so as to operate within time and budget constraints will be key
  • Provide effective leadership and management of a range of cross-functional digital teams consisting of project managers, business analysts, testers and developers
  • Work effectively with all teams in the EIU who are involved in product development in order to achieve the right technical outcomes
  • Interact and liaise with technology teams in the Economist and Group IT to deliver the right business outcomes for the EIU
  • Work collaboratively with the EIU MC, including the Editorial Director and Marketing Director, and also senior managers across EIU Consulting, to deliver value for our clients through continuing product and platform development

Experience, skills and professional attributes

To succeed in the role you must have:

  • A can do attitude with the ability to operate at a number of different levels. You will be motivated by delivering successful projects and making rapid progress which is visible to our clients
  • A good understanding of Enterprise Architecture (within the media/publishing/research industry would be preferable but not essential)
  • Able to provide examples of EA methodologies used
  • Able to provide examples of Architecture outcomes and benefits to an organisation
  • A good understanding of digital market trends (opportunities and challenges) for example Cloud Computing and SaaS tools
  • A good understanding of how best to leverage the skills and capabilities of a wide range of technology staff whom you will need to interact with in order to achieve your objectives
  • The ability to set a technical and Digital vision and roadmap to implementation
  • Knowledge and understanding of content management systems
  • Understanding of data analytics and how to use client data to drive improvements in systems and products
  • Knowledge of agile/lean methodology
  • Experience of vendor management and management of offshore teams
  • Experience of managing BAU teams and technology assets that meet SLAs
  • A background in Enterprise Architecture including enterprise analysis, design, planning, and implementation
